Tell us more about how you started into the content creation world Sherise?

I have always dreamed about being a star, a singer, a dancer, an actress and more. I have been into modeling and photography since I was 13 however, being a bigger Asian girl in an Asian country is difficult to be in the industry. Until I came to New Zealand I keep doing what I love and keep posting on social media until Belle Models provide me an opportunity to become a model. 

What do you have coming up that you can share?

 I have a few Afro beat event to attend to be a photographer and participate. These event have other models from a different agency, these models have invited me to collab and do cultural fashion walk in Auckland. I also have different ideas of photoshoot to do in the future.

What are your top tips for ladies wanting to start putting themselves out there? 

Think of yourself as a main character, a dancer, a star. Confidence is the key, beauty also shine form inside and how you present yourself. Your insecurities might be the most attractive features and you just don’t know it yet. Start going to gym not to lose weight but to sweat, fall in love with sweating enjoy the music while you work out and feel yourself. 

You live in a small town, how do you make this work in your favor?

Online connection is the main key to put yourself out there. Reach out to successful influencer models and ask them advice. Travel to big cities and go to fashion events. You can meet a lot of experienced models and people that see your potential. 

Do you have any tips for a models first shoot experience? 

Don’t think about how to look good but how you feel about yourself - express that through your body. Practice in front of the mirror. Look at different poses and which suits you the most and make you feel comfortable. 

Tell us about your first shoot experience!

My first shoot was quite awkward, I did a lot of research how to post and look confident but that didn’t help me at all. I still felt shy and not comfortable with expressing my poses. I had a friend with me, she played music to cheer me up that can help. The more practice you put into yourself the more comfortable you feel and it’s really the mindset which is feeling confident. 

What do you think is some important traits for a model to have? 

Confidence, your smile and self love!

Do you see more opportunities becoming available in NZ? 

Yes it depends on the location. Small cities can be difficult to find opportunities. However social media is taking over, starts taking selfies in your room or on the street and post them on social media. 

We are seeing more diverse models smashing it in big campaigns! What are your thoughts on this change - some say it's just a trend!

I personally believe that beauty is subjective and we are seeing more diverse models. I do believe the society or the fashion industry use diverse models as tools or decorations to influence the company or the brand seems more welcoming. But there are also companies that mainly use diverse models because they believe models should not be just “ slim, thin and tall”. 

Do you think that a social media presence is important for building your brand? 

It’s extremely important for a brand. Since social media is taking over the world, people get to see everything on Instagram, Facebook, websites and the Internet in general. Social media presence allows people to keep paying attention to content. When your social media presence is frequent, audience would notice these models more often. Audience would remember these models and what content they create. A lot of these audience are magazine manager,  photographer, model agency, clothing brand and others. So when there are shoots, advertisements and others , they would like reach out to these models and work with them.

You are a women of many talents Sherise! Tell us about your photography!

I have been doing photography for three years. I know how to capture a good picture and I know how to teach model how to pose.  I still am learning to develop some skills and I hope one day I’ll be a famous photographer guiding models and making them feel beautiful and confident.

Do you have any tips for ladies in front of the camera? What makes your job easier as the photographer? 

Confidence is the key. Listen to the photographer, ask for advice, check the photos, believe in yourself that you are a good model.

Lilli is a published model and stylist based in Auckland. She is passionate about creating art and working with a range of collaborators, exploring creativity, imagination, self expression and advocating for body positivity and confidence. She has been featured in a range of international magazines and online media, worked with a range of national and international artists, photographers and musicians covering a range of genres, art and styling. Lilli has modelled for 6 years and been represented by an agency. She is currently freelancing.

Tell us more about how you started into the modelling industry Lilli? 

I was approached by a family friend. I had never given modelling a go before.
After a few photoshoots with the same photographer and feeling empowered, I decided to seek a model agency. With little to no knowledge on suitable agencies, I joined the first one suggested to me. I completed some photoshoots and very basic pose training from the agency but I expected it to look a bit different and be more fast paced. I came to find there was little to no paid work opportunities, and the inquiries I gained through my IG that were passed on to my agency for follow up, were not turning into confirmed shoots, so I felt perhaps I would try freelancing! Please note - Freelancing does not work for everybody & quality agencies can help you with finding suitable paid work with their clients. It can be challenging finding paid work as a new model without building your brand, portfolio, and reputation first.

What do you have coming up that you can share? 
I have a few model workshops coming up! I am currently supporting a few ladies on the start of their model journey's with building their self confidence, self esteem and build on their knowledge around safety and gentes in the industry with some planned photoshoots coming up. I will be travelling to Nelson to participate in a photoshoot project with a well known NZ fine art photographer around August 2022. The project highlights Climate Change & the project is called "Monsoon Dreams." Alongside that, I hope to meet other creatives, and continue taking bookings throughout the year whilst I work on other small projects!

You focus your creativity on a specific genre - how did you decide on this? 
I love emotive protection. This is the ability to project strong emotion through powerful imagery. I felt fine art and dark art really harnessed a bit of my darker soul/personality, and allowed me to explore my alter ego and delve into the creative side. In some ways I like to call it 'acting' but it is more so allowing myself to feel and explore different moods and emotions, and project what I feel this would look like visually in photos in order to effectively execute shots. I like mystery to images that encourage the audience/viewer to spark questions or look deeper.

What is your current focus within your modelling? 
I have covered all genres of modelling previously. Within that, I was able to discover my main passion which lies within the dark art, and fine art genres of modelling. I am still passionate and involved in shooting most genres, but have come to fine my niche within. I am also focusing more on helping others in the industry, working with agencies such as Belle, photographers, bands and artists on their projects, and helping new models with model training and support with building their portfolios.

What are your top tips for ladies wanting to get into the industry?
Connect with models and people who have been in the industry for a while. Ask them questions. Research a lot - use Google and search your questions.
Create a model page via IG - use this to find other creatives and connect.
Create a portfolio - shoot a range of content and try and explore versatility.
Learn about safety in the industry - model release forms, and the different types of legal contracts and what they mean.

If a model doesent have access to photographers and paid events.. what's your thoughts on how they can build their experience and get seen? 
-Consistency is key!
-Being active and present online and social media.
-Connecting with other creatives such as models, photographers, HMUA (hair and make-up artists), and outfit stylists.
-Build your portfolio, show your diversity.
- Highlight your passion and dedication.
- Turn up to every shoot you arrange/be reliable.
- Connect with a helpful agency that sees your individual journey, not you as a number!

Do you have any tips for a models first shoot experience? 
- Communicate with your agency about Model Release forms and Contracts.
- Make sure you do ALL research on a photographer you are going to work with. Look at their social media pages, ask for testimonials, ask other models of their experiences shooting with that photographer. Gain clarity on the photographers vision and purpose of the shoot.
- Take a support person with you. If the photographer doesn't like this for your first time shooting, don't shoot with them - they should be showing respect on your journey and working ethically to ensure you feel safe and secure.
- Discuss all photoshoot concepts, locations genre, nature of the shoot prior to the shoot day to be on the same page and ensure no surprises.
- Set firm boundaries for what you feel comfortable shooting / not shooting.
- Never feel scared to let a photographer know you don't feel comfortable shooting their suggested themes - ie erotic or nudity. If they persist to push or force you, let them know you feel unsure and end/leave the photoshoot immediately and contact your agency to discuss.
- Use a HMUA or do attempt to do your makeup yourself with the help of friends! Practice makes perfect they say!

Tell us about your first shoot experience!
Oh my! My mother was really concerned about my safety! I explained all of the details, but mothers instinct wanted to keep an eye. Halfway through my photoshoot, I noticed my parents car arrive at location and they stayed in the distance to ensure I was safe and seen at all times. I was not a minor, but they were wanting to be safe. I didn't expect them to turn up to the shoot that day‍♀️ But it worked out okay and I was grateful in the end! You can always take another adult or friend along to support you. Minors should be accompanied at all times and parents should sign consent forms on behalf.

Any tips on a models first portfolio - what should be 'seen'? 
Versatility! Confidence! Passion! Consistency in giving it a go! Include your headshots, mid shots, and full body shots. You can note your measurements if you feel comfortable or have these on hand for brands if they ask for this information. Learn about how to best pose to capture your curves and angles beautifully. 

Practice posing into a mirror - and learn about emotive projection by exploring your own feelings and emotions through facial expression in your own time. 

Practice, practice, practice ladies!!

What do you think is some important traits for a model to have? 
Be a go-getter for sure!! Have confidence, passion, drive! Be sociable, interactive and have interpersonal skills to communicate effectively. Most importantly be you and be genuine in your approach! Take feedback openly, have an open mind, and stay focused!

Do you see more opportunities becoming available in NZ? 
The model industry is small in NZ but I hope for it to continue to grow and present new opportunities for models to be more widely involved.

Its important! Diversity is huge and it's important we celebrate all looks and body types! I'm all for it!!

Do you think that a social media presence is important for building your brand? 
Absolutely! It is the main force behind bringing in those enquires I feel! Using it as a communication platform to connect with like minded creatives, share your work and to show your consistency and passion is a great way to grow your following!

Anything else you might want to add - 
Remembering consistency is key! This is not just an overnight journey - it takes lots of dedication, drive and go-getting! Look after yourself and stay safe!
